A multiplicity result for the Yamabe problem on \(S^n\). (English) Zbl 0949.53028

Le but de l’article est de mettre en évidence des variétés riemanniennes compactes pour lesquelles le problème de Yamabe admet plusieurs solutions. Partant de la sphère les auteurs considèrent une perturbation \(g= g_0+ \varepsilon f\) de la métrique canonique \(g_0\). \(f\) étant choisie judicieusement, ils montrent que le problème de Yamabe pour la variété \((S_n,g)\), \(n\geq 6\), admet au moins deux solutions distinctes lorsque \(\varepsilon\) est suffisamment petit. Par la projection stéréographique, le problème est ramené à un problème sur \(\mathbb{R}^n\) au voisinage de la métrique euclidienne. Les perturbations tout d’abord envisagées sur \(\mathbb{R}^n \) sont données par \(f(x)=h(x)+k(x-y)\) avec \(h\) et \(k\) à support compact et \(|y|\) grand. Le premier auteur a mis au point récemment une méthode abstraite de perturbations. Cette méthode ne peut pas être appliquée directement ici car pour le problème de Yamabe le premier terme du développement en fonction de \(\varepsilon\) ne remplit pas les conditions voulues par la méthode, le développement doit être fait à l’ordre 2 ce qui complique beaucoup. La méthode adaptée à ce cas précis permet de prouver le résultat mentionné plus haut. Celui-ci est généralisée \(h\) et \(k\) qui proviennent de métriques sur \(S_n\) n’ont pas à être à support compact. Les hypothèses requises sont \(n\geq 6\), et les tenseurs de Weyl de \(h\) et de \(k\) non identiquement nuls.
