Duran, Jacques Introduction à la physique des matériaux granulaires. (Sands, powders, and grains. An introduction to the physics of granular materials. Foreword by Pierre-Gilles de Gennes. Transl. from the French by Axel Reisinger.) (English) Zbl 0939.74001 New York, NY: Springer. xiii, 214 p. (2000). The book covers a new and interesting area of mechanics of materials, namely the behaviour of granular aggregates. Starting from experimental facts and using simple phenomenological models and numerical schemes, the author constructs a unified frame of the physics of granular materials.Particularly, the author discusses the problem of interaction between various solid particles, static and dynamic properties of granular piles, some avalanche models, and mixing and segregation of two kinds of granular materials. Even if the presentation is quite intuitive, this work could be useful to undergraduate students and to interested researchers.
