Quality improvement through mechanistic models. (English) Zbl 0922.62104

Atkinson, Anthony C. (ed.) et al., MODA 5 - Advances in model-oriented data analysis and experimental design. Proceedings of the 5th international workshop in Marseilles, France, June 22–26, 1998. Dedicated to Andrej Pázman for his 60th birthday. Heidelberg: Physica-Verlag. Contributions to Statistics. 259-269 (1998).
Summary: The quality improvement of products with performance characteristics that can be presented by known mechanistic equations is considered. The mean and the variance models are derived under the assumption that the performance characteristic is subject to errors in factors and external noises. Mixed models are proposed that incorporate both mechanistic and regression parts. They are useful when a mechanistic model is known, but the external noises can only be studied through experiments. Modelling a cutting process by use of a mixed model is considered.
