Ishimaru, Akira
Wave propagation and scattering in random media. Repr. of the 1978 orig.
(English)
[B] Oxford: Oxford Univ. Press. New York, NY: IEEE Press, xxv, 574 p. \sterling 65.00 (1997). ISBN 0-19-859226-4; ISBN 0-7803-3409-4

This is a reprint of the popular engineering book first published as two volumes in 1978 by Academic Press. The reprint is in one volume and essentially the same as the original except for some minor corrections. The update is given only in the short preface, where 25 selected references are listed. A foreword is included in this reprint version, biographical information about the author is given at the end of the book, and there is now only one index instead of a separate index for each volume. All the original references now appear at the end of the book, whereas each original volume contained only the references pertaining to it; one paragraph, roughly one page long, is now omitted from the end of the original first volume. Consequently, each page in the original second volume now appears 8 pages earlier. \par The book is intended for engineers and scientists interested in wave interaction with random media and its mathematical description. The book is divided into five parts. In Part I (Chapters 2-6) the scattering in random media is considered and in Part II (Chapters 7-13) the transport theory is analyzed; the original first volume consisted of these two parts. Part III (Chapters 14 and 15) deals with the theory of multiple scattering, Part IV (Chapters 16-20) is about the weak and strong fluctuation theories in random media, and Part V (Chapters 21 and 22) deals with rough surface scattering and remote sensing of random media. Finally, in the four appendices some useful material and formula are given.
