Effect of wall conduction on natural convection over a vertical slender hollow circular cylinder.
(English)
[J] Appl. Sci. Res. 54, No.1, 39-50 (1995). ISSN 0003-6994

The author studies the conjugate laminar free convection of an incompressible fluid over a vertical slender hollow circular cylinder with the inner surface held at a constant temperature. The temperature of the outer surface is determined from the coupled heat conduction of the cylinder and the free convection of the fluid. A wall conduction parameter $p$ is introduced which is a measure of the heat conductivities of the solid and the fluid, and the thickness of the cylindrical shell. Thus, the principal objective is to investigate the effect of the conduction on the heat transfer of the free convection flow. \par The non-similar boundary layer equations are solved by a very efficient finite difference method known as the Keller-box scheme. Results are reported for a range of values of $p$ and Prandtl number Pr. The principal result is that the overall effect of conduction of the cylinder reduces the rate of heat transfer. Any calculation of the heat transfer rate based on the assumption of a constant wall temperature overestimates this quantity.
