The authors introduce the notion of screen distribution of a degenerate hypersurface of a semi-Riemannian manifold. Then they get Gauss-Codazzi equations of the immersion of a degenerate hypersurface and characterizations of integrable and parallel screen distributions. Totally geodesic and totally umbilical degenerate hypersurfaces of real space forms are also studied.
