Statistical models in \(S\). (English) Zbl 0776.62007

Wadsworth & Brooks/Cole Computer Science Series. Pacific Grove, CA: Wadsworth & Brooks/Cole Advanced Book & Software,. xv, 608 p. (1992).
[The articles of this volume will not be indexed individually.]
The present book extends the \(S\) language to fit and analyze a variety of statistical models, including analysis of variance, generalized linear models, additive models, local regression, and tree-based models. The book describes and uses a new system of object oriented programming in \(S\), providing a powerful but simple integration of model fitting, graphics and data analysis. Models of all types are organized around a few key concepts:
data frame objects to hold the data; formula objects to represent the structure of models.
This book represents the results of research in both the computational and statistical aspects of modelling the data. Ten authors have been involved in writing the book, all but two are in the statistical research departments at AT & T Bell Laboratories. The contents, with the authors in parentheses, read as follows:
An appetizer (J. M. Chambers, T. J. Hastie); Statistical models (J. M. Chambers, T. J. Hastie); Data for models (J. M. Chambers); Linear models (J. M. Chambers); Analysis of variance; Designed experiments (J. M. Chambers, A. E. Freeny, R. M. Heiberger); Generalized linear models (T. J. Hastie, D. Pregibon); Generalized additive models (T. J. Hastie); Local regression models (W. S. Cleveland, E. Grosse, W. M. Shyu); Tree-based models (L. A. Clark, D. Pregibon); Nonlinear models (D. M. Bates, J. M. Chambers); Classes and methods – object oriented programming in \(S\) (J. M. Chambers); \(S\)-functions and classes (J. M. Chambers).
