A tameness criterion for Galois representations associated to modular forms (mod \(p\)). (English) Zbl 0743.11030

Dans ce travail remarquable l’auteur démontre le critère de modération conjecturé par Serre sur la ramification en \(p\) des représentations continues de dimension 2 de \(\hbox{Gal}(\overline {\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})\) associées aux formes modularies \(\pmod p\) de \(T_ 1(N)\).
On sait effectivement depuis les résultats de Deligne et de Carayol qu’à chaque forme propre cuspidale normalisée \(f=\sum a_ nq^ n\) de poids \(k\) et de caractère \(\varepsilon\) pour \(\Gamma_ 1(N)\) à coefficients dans un corps fini \(E\) de caractéristique \(p\), est associée une représentation semi-simple \(\rho_ f\) de \(\hbox{Gal}(\overline {\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})\) dans \(Gl_ 2(E)\), non ramifiée en dehors de \(N\) et de \(p\), et que pour \(k\geq 2\) et \(a_ p\neq 0\), la restriction de \(\rho_ f\) à un sous-groupe de décomposition au dessus de \(p\) est, à conjugaison près, de la forme \[ \begin{pmatrix} \chi^{k-1}\cdot\lambda(\varepsilon(p)/a_ p) & * \\ 0 & \lambda(a_ p)\end{pmatrix} \] si \(\chi\) est le caractère de l’action de \(\hbox{Gal}(\overline {\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q}_ p)\) sur \(\mu_ p\), et \(\lambda(a_ p)\) l’unique caractère non ramifié qui envoie le Frobenius de \(p\) sur \(a_ p\). Serre avait conjecturé que la restriction de \(\rho_ f\) à \(\hbox{Gal}(\overline {\mathbb{Q}_ p}/\mathbb{Q}_ p)\) est complètement réductible (i.e. que l’on a \(*=0)\) si et seulement si \(f\) admet un compagnon c’est à dire une forme propre normalisée \(g=\sum b_ nq^ n\) de poids \(k'=p+1-k\) et de caractère \(\varepsilon\) pour \(\Gamma_ 1(N)\) dont les coefficients de Fourier vérifient l’identité \(n^ kb_ k=na_ n\) pour tout \(n\geq 1\), de sorte que l’on ait \(\rho_ f\otimes\chi\simeq \rho_ g\otimes\chi^ r\). C’est précisément ce que l’auteur établit ici pour \(k\in\{2,\ldots,p\}\), sous la condition additionnelle \(a^ 2_ p\neq\varepsilon(p)\) pour \(k=p\). Le point essentiel de la démonstration consiste à construire le compagnon \(g\) de \(f\) sous l’hypothèse de modération. La preuve de l’auteur utilise librement les diverses techniques cohomologiques \(p\)-adiques (de Rham; cristalline; Washnitzer- Monsky) pour les courbes modulaires et leurs jacobiennes et s’appuie sur les travaux antérieurs de Katz, Deligne, Serre, Mazur, Igusa, etc.…sur la théorie géométrique des formes modulaires.
