The kinematics of mixing: stretching, chaos, and transport. (English) Zbl 0721.76015

Cambridge Texts in Applied Mathematics. Cambridge etc.: Cambridge Univerity Press. xiv, 364 p. £50.00/hbk; $ 79.50/hbk; £20.00/pbk; $ 34.50/pbk (1989).
The author has delivered 8 lectures on the topic of mixing - through stretching, chaos and transport. These lectures were then published in the form of this book. The topic is a physically complicated one and has to be studied from original books published earlier. Without studying at least one book thoroughly, it is very difficulty to understand the topics which are discussed in a very concise way, in this book. Engineers who deal with this topic, are usually not aware of the principles of pure mathematics and hence, in normal course they will find it difficult to understand the topics discussed in this book.
It would have been better if the author had discussed some concepts of pure mathematics in one chapter before he proceeds to their use in the other chapters. In that case, the book would have been more interesting and readable. As in the present form, very few will read this book and it cannot be recommended as a text-book for UG and PG classes because of its limitations. The book is nicely printed, photographs, drawings are very good, but the reader will not get the physical ideas from these pictures with the help of differential equations in abstract form.
