Der Autor benutzt die Kettenbruchentwicklungen von \(\sqrt{D}\) und \((1+\sqrt{D})/2\) zur Herleitung eines neuen Kriteriums für die Existenz ungerader ganzzahliger Lösungen \((x,y)\) der Gleichung \(x^ 2-Dy^ 2=4.\) Ist die Diophantische Gleichung \(u^ 2-Dv^ 2=-1\) lösbar, so erhält man ein solches Kriterium bereits durch den Vergleich der Längen \(\ell (\sqrt{D})\) und \(\ell ((1+\sqrt{D})/2)\) der primitiven Perioden modulo 4 [P. Kaplan and K. S. Williams, J.
