An account of the rapid development of applied mathematics in the U.S. during and after the war, mainly from the personal contact the author had through her leading positions with the Offices of Scientific Research and Development and, subsequently, of Naval Research. Among the fields covered are computing, mechanics, sequential analysis, and operations research. Valuable informations on mathematicians known to the author by scientific and official contacts, including brief characteristics of their contributions. Personal remarks on the influence on mathematics instruction that grew out of military requirements of the 1940’s.
