Social influence and opinions. (English) Zbl 0712.92025

The paper describes an approach to the relationships between a network of interpersonal influences and the contents of individuals’ opinions. The authors make use of a recursive deterministic definition of the process of opinion formation: \[ Y_ 1=X_ 1B_ 1,\quad Y_ t=\alpha_ tW_ tY_{t-1}+\beta_ tX_ tB_ t, \] Y being vectors of opinion characteristics, X externals and \(\alpha\), \(\beta\), W, B coefficients. Special results are given for the “Basic Model” with all coefficients independent of time.
The general model is shown to be a generalization of several special cases: Linear discrepancy model, Peer effects model and Group consensus models. Moreover, the authors show that this general model enables to link social conformity theories with those conflict-oriented provided static conditions.
