Vladimirov, Yu.S.
On the evolution of the ideas on space-time structure.
(Russian. English summary)
[J] Istor. Metodol. Estestv. Nauk, Fiz. 26, 76-90 (1981).

Summary: The main stages are discussed concerning the fundamental physical ideas on space-time structure for the last four and a half centuries. A special attention is paid to the process of formation of the general theory of relativity, beginning with N. I. Lobatchevsky through B. Riemann, W. Clifford and E. Mach to A. Einstein. The tendencies of evolution of the ideas of the space-time structure are discussed from the creation of the general theory of relativity to our days (relationalist and substantionalist conceptions of space-time, direct interparticle interaction theory, problems of dimensionality and discreteness of space- time, geometry at small distances, etc.). Some speculations are made on perspectives of the future evolution of the space-time notions, on the ways of unification the quantum theory principles and principles of the general theory of relativity.
