L’aide multicritère à la décision. Préface de Bernard Roy. (Multicriterial support for decision-making. Preface by Bernard Roy). (French) Zbl 0673.90022

Statistique et Mathématiques Appliquées. Bruxelles: Éditions de l’Université de Bruxelles; Paris: Éditions Ellipses. 179 p. FB 750.00 (1989).
This book presents an overview of the fastly growing field of Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM). As the title suggests, this book, unlike many others on MCDM, is not only a collection of methods but aims at introducing the reader to a methodology for modelling decision problems using several criteria. Therefore the book begins with three important chapters devoted to the modelling of alternatives, of preferences and of criteria. A wide range of methods are then presented in the next three chapters. They are classified into three main categories: Multiattribute utility theory, outranking methods and interactive methods. Each method is accompanied with examples and/or comments that will prove extremely useful for the non-specialist. A final chapter presents some applications of these methods and discusses the connections between MCDM and a number of related fields such as social choice theory and expert systems. The book concludes with a rich annotated bibliography.
This book is a very useful addition to the literature. It offers a concise, clear but always rigorous introduction to a large number of methods as well as an overview of the modelling process in MCDM. It will be extremely useful as a manual for a course on MCDM. It can also be thoroughly recommended to OR researchers and practitioners looking for an up-to-date introduction to the field of MCDM.
