Hughston, L.P.; Shaw, W.T.
Classical strings in ten dimensions.
(English)
[J] Proc. R. Soc. Lond., Ser. A 414, 423-431 (1987). ISSN 0080-4630

The solution of the string equations of motion (in conformal gauge) can be reduced to the determination of a pair of null curves. Continuing earlier work on the 3-, 4- and 6-dimensional case the authors express the generic null curve in 10-dimensional complex flat space in terms of essentially freely specifiable functions. Extensive use is made of Cartan's ``pure spinors'' in 10 dimensions. As a by-product of the investigation also the generic complex null curve in 8 dimensions is determined. The problem of imposing reality conditions on the string in the case of Lorentzian signature of the metric is left open.
