Evaluation of an opportunistic replacement policy for a 2-unit system. (English) Zbl 0607.90037

The paper examines opportunistic replacement policies for a system consisting of two parts. One part is non-failing and it is always replaced at a certain age if not replaced opportunistically. The second part has a random life with an increasing failure rate. The cost of replacing the two parts at the same time is less than the sum of the costs of replacing them separately.
The authors analyse an opportunistic replacement policy which is based upon a control age limit, called a screen; the policy is to replace a part at a replacement opportunity if its age exceeds its screen.
When the life of the second part is uniformly distributed the authors obtain the long-run rates of single and joint-replacements.
