Combinatorial squashings, 3-manifolds, and the third homology of groups. (English) Zbl 0604.57001

Bekanntlich lassen sich 3-Mannigfaltigkeiten konstruieren, indem man auf der Oberfläche \(S^ 2\) einer 3-Kugel \(B^ 3\) Flächenstücke paarweise identifiziert. Diese Konstruktion kann man (nach Definition geeigneter kombinatorischer CW-Strukturen) auf allgemeinere Quotientierungen \((B^ 3,S^ 2)\to (K^ 3,K^ 2)\) von Paaren verschieden orientierter Flächenstücke auf \(S^ 2\) übertragen. Die Identifikationsabbildung (”squashing map”) liegt im Kern des Hurewiczhomomorphismus \(\pi_ 2(K^ 2)\to H_ 2(K^ 2)\). Von ihr läßt sich eine spezielle Identität von \(\pi_ 1(K^ 2)\) ablesen, welche in vielen Fällen ein erzeugendes Element von \(H_ 3(\pi_ 1(K^ 2))\) definiert.
Mit diesem Ansatz werden die Untersuchungen des Autors fortgeführt, Peifferelementen Verschlingungen zuzuordnen und Elemente der Gruppenhomologie geometrisch zu deuten. Insbesondere aber wird aus einem Heegarddiagramm (über sogenannte ”highwigh”-Systeme) eine Verschlingung in \(S^ 3\) konstruiert, von welcher der Autor hofft(e), daß sie Einsichten für das Poincaré-Problem ergibt. Die Arbeit enthält viele schöne Beispiele (u.a. eine Serie von Homologie-3-Sphären mit dem Dodekaederraum als Start) und ist eine wertvolle Anregung für grundlegende Fragen der 3-dimensionalen Topologie.
