Activity of António Aniceto Monteiro in Lisbon between 1932 and 1942. (Portuguese. English summary) Zbl 0574.01015

This paper reviews the career from 1939 to 1942 of António Aniceto Monteiro, founder of the important journal Portugaliae Mathematica, of the Center for Mathematical Studies of the I.A.C. (Instituto para a Alta Cultura) and of other Portuguese mathematical institutions as well as principal source of inspiration to a generation of young Portuguese mathematicians. Monteiro, who had been in Paris on a scholarship under a predecessor of the I.A.C., returned during the difficult early years of the Salazar dictatorship (and of the Spanish civil war). Before this, Portuguese universities had confined their mathematical training to that necessary for secondary school teachers, technicians and scientists. Despite the very oppressive situation, Monteiro’s enthusiasm and determination opened the door to advanced mathematical study and research in Portugal.
