On fitting exponentials by nonlinear least squares. (English)

The problem of approximating a set of data or a given continuous function by a sum of exponentials is studied on a few examples. It is shown that the least squares surface may be very flat and give rise to an ill conditioned problem. It is stated that it is difficult to infer from the data alone whether the problem will be ill conditioned or well conditioned.
