Summary: This paper proposes a new fuzzy similarity measure to calculate the degree of similarity of generalized fuzzy numbers (GFNs). The fuzzy similarity measure is developed by integrating the concept of centre of gravity (COG) points and fuzzy difference of distance of points of fuzzy numbers. A fuzzy description for difference of distances between fuzzy numbers in turn exploits an appropriate similarity measure between the pattern sets when compared with other measures available. It greatly reduces the influence of inaccurate measures and provides a very intuitive quantification. Several sets of pattern recognition problems and a fingerprint matching problem are taken to compare the proposed method with the existing similarity measures. Our approach gives a better and more robust similarity measure.
