About Zentralblatt MATH

Zentralblatt MATH (ZBMATH) is the world's most complete and longest running abstracting and reviewing service in pure and applied mathematics. The ZBMATH database contains about 3 million bibliographic entries with reviews or abstracts drawn from more than 3,500 journals and 1,100 serials and covers the period from 1868 to present by the recent integration of the Jahrbuch database (JFM).

Reviews are presently written by about 6,000 active experts from all over the world. The entries are classified according to the Mathematics Subject Classification Scheme (MSC 2010).

Subject coverage (MSC Scheme)

ZBMATH covers all areas of pure and applied mathematics and history of mathematics (including logic, combinatorics, number theory, algebraic geometry, algebra and group theory, real and complex analysis, ordinary and partial differential equations, functional analysis, topology, geometry, probability theory and statistics, numerical mathematics, theoretical computer science and automata theory, mathematical quantum and statistical physics, classical, solid and fluid mechanics, general relativity and astronomy, electrodynamics, heat and mass transfer, geophysics, mathematical programming, operations research, game theory, financial mathematics and economics, systems and control theory, information and communication, circuits, coding, cryptography, applications in biology, chemistry, sociology, psychology, and education).

Publications coverage

ZBMATH covers all available published and refereed articles, books, conferences as well as other publication formats (CD-ROM, DVD, Video-tapes, web-documents) belonging to the scope given above. Moreover, ZBMATH also partially covers theses (when received at the editorial office).For the list of journals covered see Serials and Journals.Within current electronic library activities, retrospective data of journals are made available even prior to 1868. The bibliographic information and links to the full texts are stored within ZBMATH if the data are given to the editorial office. For instance, Crelle's journal (Journal für die Reine und Angewandte Mathematik) has been extended to Vol. 1 (1826).

Annual input figures

The current number of new items added to the Zentralblatt MATH database is about 120,000 per year. In the core areas of mathematics, more than 50% are independent reviews by experts, the remainder are abstracts and summaries of comparable quality.

Update schedule

Bibliographic data are updated daily Reviews are also updated on a daily basis after initial editorial work has been carried out. The final edited version of a review is added after assignment of the item to a particular Zentralblatt volume.

Copyright information

All abstracts (summaries) included in the ZBMATH database are, to the best knowledge of the editorial offices, the work of the respective authors of the abstracted articles (or of substitutes accepted by the authors). As such, they are copyrighted in the same manner as the articles themselves and we refer the users of each of the publication formats (e.g. print, online and CD-ROM) of the ZBMATH database to the journals in which those articles appear for further information concerning copyright ownership.
