Arthur Lyon Bowley (1869‒1957) was a British economist, econometrician and statistician. This detailed biography documents his various contributions to these and contiguous scientific fields. After a description of Bowley’s vita in Chapter 1, Chapters 2‒5 deal with his econometric work, comprising social, national and official statistics, his investigations on wages and incomes, and related books. Thereafter, Chapters 6‒9 are concerned with contributions to the fields of descriptive and inferential statistics, with a particular focus on index numbers (Chapter 8) and representative survey schemes (Chapter 9). The book concludes with three chapters devoted to Arthur L. Bowley’s treatment of further topics in economics (Chapter 10), mathematics (Chapter 11) and other fields of science (Chapter 12) and is rounded off by a careful collection of bibliographic references.
