Main Changes from MSC1991 to MSC2000

During the revision process, a large number of minor changes, additions and ommissions have been made which you will find in the single sections. The major changes, however, are listed below, to make navigation in the new scheme even more easy for you.

Section Changes
04 Set Theory This section moved completely to the corresponing codes in 03E.
20 Group theory Groupoids (formerly 20Lxx) are now collected in one code (20L05)
22 Topological Groups, Lie Groups A new subsection 20Fxx 'Noncompact transformation groups' was established
32 Several complex variables and analytic spaces The sections on complex manifolds were reorganized and several new subsections created:
32Txx pseudoconvex domains
32Uxx Pluripotential theory
32Vxx CR manifolds
34 Ordinary differential Equations Dynamical systems are now mainly classified in section 37. The subsection on functional-differential equations was extended by additional items and a new section on differential equations in the complex domain was created.
37 Dynamical Systems and ergodic theory This new section was created to provide a unique place for items on dynamical systems which were spread over several places before (e.g. 34C35, 54H20, 58Fxx).
Following are the new subsections:
37Axx Ergodic theory.
37Bxx Topological dynamics.
37Cxx Smooth dynamical systems.
37Dxx Dynamical systems with hyperbolic behavior.
37Exx Low-dimensional dynamical systems.
37Fxx Complex dynamical systems.
37Gxx Local and nonlocal bifurcation theory.
37Bxx Random dynamical systems.
37Jxx Finite-dimensional Hamiltonian, Lagrangian, contact and nonholonomic systems
37Exx Infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems
37Lxx Infinite-dimensional dissipative dynamical systems
37Mxx Approximation methods and numerical treatment
37NxxApplications
46 Functional Analysis A new subsection 46Txx 'Nonlinear functional analysis' was made up from parts of 47Hxx and 58-XX
47 Operator theory A new subsection 47Jxx 'Equations and inequalities involving nonlinear operators' was from the corresponding items in the old subsection 47Hxx.
The new subsection 47Lxx 'Linear spaces and algebras of operators' includes the corresponding items from the old 47Dxx and parts of 46Lxx subsections.
49 Calculus of variations and optimal control In subsection 49Mxx 'Methods of successive approximation' several items were dropped because there are similar ones in 90Cxx 'Mathematical programming'.
53 Differential geometry A new subsection 53Dxx 'Symplectic geometry, contact geometry' was established.
58 Global analysis, analysis on manifolds Subsection 58Fxx moved mainly to section 37-XX. A new subsection 58Kxx 'Singularities and catastrophe theory' was established.
65 Numerical analysis Old subsection 65P05 was closed. A new subsection 65Pxx 'Numerical problems in dynamical systems' was created, which relates to the new subsection 37Mxx.
68 Computer Science The items on algorithms in 68Qxx moved to the new subsection 68Wxx 'Algorithms'. Numerical algorithms remain in section 65.
70 Mechanics of particle and systems Subsection 70Dxx 'Dynamics of a particle' moved mainly to 70Fxx 'Dynamics of a system of particles, including celestial mechanics'
73 Mechanics of solids
74 Mechanics of deformable solids
Section 73 was completely reorganized and appears now as section 74
76 Fluid mechanics Old subsection 76Cxx is now included in subsection 76Bxx 'Incompressible inviscid fluids'
90 Old: Economics, Operations research, programming, games.
90 New: Operations research, mathematical programming.
91 Game theory, economics, social and behavioral sciences.
92 Old: Biology and other natural sciences. Behavioral sciences.
92 New: Biology and other natural sceinces.
These three sections were created rearranging the old 90-XX and 92-XX sections. 90-XX is now restricted to the subsections 90Bxx 'Operations Research' and 90Cxx 'Mathematical programming'. 92 is now restricted to mathematical applications in Biology and other natural sciences. The new section 91-XX 'Game theory, economics, social and behavioral sciences' was set up from the corresponding old subsections in the old 90-XX and 92-XX sections.
97 Mathematics education This section is completely new in the MSC2000. It should be used for the secondary classification of educational aspects of papers describing primary in one of the sections 00 through 94.
The numbering of this section and its subsections corresponds to the classification of the abstracting journal 'International Reviews on Mathematical Education', the electronic version of which also available on EMIS as database 'MATHDI' http://www.emis.de/MATH/DI
