    <ab>In this paper, some findings from a study of seventh grade pupils' writing in solving problems about area are discussed. The purpose of the paper is to illustrate how journal writing can be used in mathematical classrooms to monitor pupils' thinking and learning about mathematical concepts, and, if needed, to orient them towards reconceptualisation.</ab>
