This paper describes a longitudinal study which tracked a cohort of preservice mathematics teachers through their mathematics method course and into their first year of teaching. It takes a single case in order to show the variation of commitment across context and suggests a way of describing teachers' beliefs so as to recognise the interrelationship of subjectivity and social context.
