These "dissertations" were small investigations that the students had to defend to the exam committee. The topic was chosen by the student but had to be approved by the professor who also corrected the first version of the paper. The authors present the university context in which this work was carried out and give information about some "dissertations". One was carried out by Eus\'ebio Tamagni, who later was Ministry of Education, and concerned the definite integral, integrability criteria and integrable functions. Another was made by Francisco Gomes Teixeira, who become one of the most important Portuguese mathematicians, about calculus of variations, that included a historical introduction, definition of variation according to Euler, fundamental principles of calculus of variations, main results concerning the conditions so that the integral is maximum or minimum, concerning the designated limits, and concerning the independent and dependent variables. The article concludes raising questions about the present situation of higher education in Portugal, especially regarding the development of students' investigation spirit. \itemrv{~} \itemcc{} \itemut{} \itemli{} \end
