Bergen: Bergen University College. Part III, 385-392 (2004).} \itemab Summary: This study explores students' algebraic and geometric approach in solving tasks in functions and the relation of these approaches with complex geometric problem solving. Data were obtained from 95 sophomore pre-service teachers, enrolled in a basic algebra course. Implicative statistical analysis was performed to evaluate the relation between students' approach and their ability to solve geometric problems. Results provided support for students' intention to use the algebraic approach to solve simple function tasks. Students who were able to use geometric approach had better results in solving complex geometric problems. Implications of findings for teaching functions are discussed. \itemrv{~} \itemcc{I29 C49 B50 A69} \itemut{linear functions; quadratic functions; graph of a function; teaching methods; skills; preservice teachers} \itemli{http://www.emis.de/proceedings/PME28/RR/RR154\_Mousoulides.pdf} \end
