Summary: For some years now, SimCalc has been successfully used in the USA in the teaching of functions. In this contribution, we focus on its potential in the context of Brazilian school mathematics. We present results of a study involving a group of mathematics teachers as they explored the possibilities offered by the software and considered the design of SimCalc activities for 13--15 year-old students, that might ``fit" the approaches related to function as prescribed in the mathematics curriculum activities currently used in the public school system of the State of S\~ao Paulo.
