The first section of the paper includes an enunciation of the problem (conditional minimization of smoothing functional in the Sobolev space) and a brief description of interpolating and smoothing splines. The contents of the paper follows with the ``Auxiliary problem'', which reduces the initial problem to an auxiliary one of unconditional minimization and proves the existence and uniqueness of a natural spline $s_\alpha$ satisfying certain conditions. The main result consists of the ``Connection equation'' and it proves that the spline $s_\alpha$ gives the unique solution of the basic problem. Finally, the whole algorithm for solving the problem in the particular case of partial smoothing is presented.}, reviewer = {I.Grosu (Ia\c{s}i)}, identifier = {00966723}, }
