Computing real square roots of a real matrix. (English)
Linear Algebra Appl. 88-89, 405-430 (1987).
{\it Å. Björck} and {\it S. Hammarling} [ibid. 52/53, 127-140 (1983; Zbl 0515.65037)] have introduced a method for computing the square root of a matrix utilizing the Schur decomposition. In general this method requires complex arithmetic. The main purpose of the present method is to show how the method can be extended so as to compute a real root of a real matrix, if one exists, in real arithmetic.
