Kleinberg received the Rolf Nevanlinna Prize at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Madrid in 2006. Kleinberg’s work on so-called hubs and authorities addressed the problem of how, out of a millions of documents on the World Wide Web, you can select a small number in response to a query. The author discusses several contributions by Kleinberg which are based on methods from probability, random graphs and matrix theory. rv: Reinhard Siegmund-Schultze (Kristiansand)
