It may seem unnaturally at the first sight to place the solving of the linear systems within the frame of the present problems of the numerical analysis. However, the reality shows that in the case of large linear systems (which are the most frequent in practice) there exist numerous situations when the practical use of direct methods leads to major difficulties. This thing has lead to the development of other directions of study. Thus, at present, it is unanimously admitted that, besides/combined with multigrid and preconditioning, the Krylov methods are the most efficient techniques for solving large linear systems. rv:
