Summary: According to renewal process theory, a random inspection model subject to external shocks is established, and the availability and long-run average cost per unit time are investigated. Assuming that the intervals between inspection times form a Poisson process, the optimal inspection policy of the model is obtained by minimising the long-run average cost per unit time. The results show that the random inspection model is superior to existing models for systems subject to external shocks. Furthermore, the function of the system is discussed by the random methods, and provides a new method for the study of this kind of problems.
