This is a survey article written by one of the best researchers in algorithmic randomness theory. The author gives a fairly clear historical description of how the lowness and $K$-triviality notions were found and turned out to be related. Then he briefly discusses the interactions between computability and randomness. The article ends with a list of open problems, some of which have been solved in the meanwhile. (There is a typo in the reference lis: in item 17, the author A. Nies appears twice.)
