Detecting shape of spatial data via zero moments. (English)
Dæhlen, Morten (ed.) et al., Mathematical methods for curves and surfaces: Tromsø 2004. Sixth international conference on mathematical methods for curves and surfaces, celebrating the 60th birthday of Tom Lyche, Tromsø, Norway, July 1‒6, 2004. Summary: Given a set of possibly noisy data belonging to a spatial curve, we propose a strategy, based on local zero moments for the construction of a piecewise linear curve which describes tape of the data. Such a piecewise linear curve is the required input in constructing a smooth approximating curve reproducing the shape of the data. Graphical examples illustrate the performances of the method.
