By using the bivariate exponential model of {\it J. E. Freund} [J. Am. Stat. Assoc. 56, 971‒977 (1961; Zbl 0106.13304)] for the life time of one component and the repair time of another component, we developed methods for obtaining optimal number of down time in such a way that the long run expected reward per unit time is maximized.
