ab: In the preface, the author states that the book addresses itself especially
    to the average student, to enable him or her to learn and understand as
    much algebra as possible. After going through the book one agrees with
    the author. This book is a standard text covering various aspects of
    group theory, ring theory, field theory and vector spaces. Exercises
    are refined or reworded, and a few application areas, mainly aspects of
    coding and automata theory, are added in this second edition. There are
    many examples and exercises. There is also a chapter on number theory,
    and another on ruler and compass. It is readable, with good printing
    and attractive get-up.
