After going through the book one agrees with the author. This book is a standard text covering various aspects of group theory, ring theory, field theory and vector spaces. Exercises are refined or reworded, and a few application areas, mainly aspects of coding and automata theory, are added in this second edition. There are many examples and exercises. There is also a chapter on number theory, and another on ruler and compass. It is readable, with good printing and attractive get-up. rv: K.Chandrasekhara Rao (Karaikudi)
