ab: Summary: We present here the main ideas and the main results concerning the
    splicing operation (a model of the recombinant behavior of DNA
    sequences under the influence of restriction enzymes and ligases) as a
    possible support for designing universal and programmable computers.
    Our approach is mathematically oriented, not biochemically. Related
    topics are also briefly discussed.
